The Best Monte Cristo Recipe

The brunch-friendly Monte Cristo sandwich comprises ham, cheese, Dijon mustard, mayonnaise and jam. Dipped in French toast batter and pan-fried, this gourmet sandwich is ready in minutes.  

– 6 slices white bread – ▢2 teaspoons Dijon mustard – ▢4 slices Swiss cheese – ▢4 slices thick-sliced deli ham – ▢1 tablespoon mayonnaise – ▢4 slices thick-sliced deli turkey – ▢1 tablespoon raspberry jam plus more for serving – ▢1 large egg – ▢2 tablespoons whole milk – ▢Big pinch of salt – ▢2 tablespoons unsalted butter divided – ▢Powdered sugar for garnish

INGREDIENTS

Put two bread pieces on a clean surface. Spread mustard on the bread top. Add 1 Swiss cheese and 2 gammon slices to each.   

Step 1

Place two more bread slices mayonnaise-side up atop the ham. Add 2 turkey slices and 1 Swiss cheese to each sandwich.   

Step 2

Apply raspberry jam to the top of the last two bread slices and arrange them on the sandwich. Mix egg, milk, and salt in a shallow basin.  

Step 3

Heat half the butter in a large nonstick skillet on medium. Quickly dip both sides of a sandwich in egg mixture and set in skillet.   

Step 4

Cook 2–3 minutes per side, flipping once, until golden brown and cheese melts. Butter the other sandwich.  

Step 5

Cut toasted sandwiches on a board. Sprinkle powdered sugar. Cut sandwiches in half and serve hot with raspberry jam.
