The Best Candied Bacon Recipe

Candied bacon is made quickly with cupboard ingredients. Cayenne pepper adds heat to the right sweet-salty flavour.  

– 1 pound thick-cut bacon (450g) – ▢¾ cup light brown sugar (165g) – ▢2 teaspoons ground black pepper – ▢¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)


Heat the oven to 375°F. Put a wire rack on a foil-lined baking sheet. Place bacon pieces near together but not overlapping on the rack.  

Step 1

In a small bowl, mix sugar, black pepper, and cayenne. Lightly pat the sugar mixture on the bacon slices to coat evenly.  

Step 2

The bacon should be bubbly and caramelised after 30–35 minutes of baking, flipping the pan halfway through. (Bake time depends on bacon thickness).  

Step 3

Allow bacon to cool on the rack for 10 minutes. Place bacon on parchment. Let cool completely before serving.Bacon crisps as it cools. Keep leftovers in the fridge for 5 days.
