To recreate this popular takeout dish at home, give this straightforward recipe for orange chicken on an air fryer a shot. The combination of crunchy chicken with a sweet orange sauce is one that is really difficult to beat! Serve on top of a bed of rice or veggies that have been stir-fried.

Ingredients

For the Chicken:

  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast or thighs cut into 1” cubes (450g)
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup cornstarch or potato starch (112g)

For the Orange Sauce:

  • ½ cup fresh orange juice (120mL) (about 2 oranges)
  • ¼ cup soy sauce (60mL)
  • ¼ cup packed light brown sugar (55g)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest about 2 oranges
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  •  teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 3 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • Sesame seeds and sliced green onions for serving

Instructions

For the Chicken:

  1. To ensure that the chicken is evenly coated, put the chicken, egg, and salt in a bowl of medium size and toss to combine.
  2. You should put the cornstarch in a basin that is not too deep and stir it around to break up any large clumps. Take the chicken pieces and transfer them to the flour mixture, working with a few pieces at a time. Toss the chicken pieces until they are well covered in the dredging. Only dredge the items that can be placed in your basket at the same time.
  3. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. Arrange the chicken pieces that have been dredged in a single layer within the basket of the air fryer. A large amount of cooking spray should be applied to the chicken.
  5. Six minutes of air frying time. The chicken pieces should be flipped over and then sprayed with cooking spray once more. Continue to air fry for approximately six more minutes, or until the food is golden and crispy. Continue dredging and cooking the remaining pieces of chicken once you have transferred the chicken that has been cooked to a big bowl.

For the Orange Sauce:

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the orange juice, soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, zest, ginger, oil, pepper, and garlic. Do this while the final batch of chicken is cooking. Place over medium-high heat, bring to a boil, and continue cooking until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  2. In a small bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in the water, and then whisk the mixture into the saucepan when it is ready. Cook the mixture while whisking it frequently until it becomes thick and transparent, which should take around one minute.
  3. Coat the chicken with the sauce by pouring it over it and tossing it. Sesame seeds and green onions should be sprinkled on top before serving immediately.

Notes

Cut the chicken into even pieces. Each piece of chicken doesn’t have to be the exact same size, but they should all be about the same size so that they cook at the same rate.
Do not forget the cooking spray. Make sure to use cooking spray on the chicken after it has been spread so that the cornstarch gets crispy in the air fryer. Also, don’t forget to spray the chicken on the other side after you flip it over.
Dredge the chicken pieces one at a time. You shouldn’t coat all the chicken at once with flour because it will get gooey as it sits because it won’t fit in the air fryer basket. Instead, only coat as much chicken as will fit in the basket at once. Don’t do anything with the next batch until the first batch is done cooking.
Orange marmalade is good! Instead of fresh orange zest and brown sugar, use 1/4 cup of orange marmalade. Don’t have any fresh oranges? This is a great way to add that tangy taste.
